How to pick a thumbnail font

  1. Type your text. Keep it short: 2 to 5 words. Press Enter to split it over two lines.
  2. Pick a style. White with a black outline works on almost any photo. Yellow stands out on busy or dark backgrounds.
  3. Check the small preview. Every font shows your text in a 168 px thumbnail, the size YouTube shows it beside other videos. If it says too small, split it into two lines, use fewer words, or pick a condensed font.
  4. Pick and download. Tap a font to set your title in it. PNG gives you the text on a transparent background, ready to drop on your thumbnail. Font gives you the .ttf file for PixelLab, CapCut, Canva or Photoshop.

Frequently asked questions

What font do YouTubers use for thumbnails?
Mostly heavy, simple sans-serif fonts: Anton, Bebas Neue, Montserrat Black, Impact-style condensed fonts, and rounded cartoon fonts like Luckiest Guy for challenge and reaction videos. What matters more than the exact font is weight and contrast: thick letters, a dark outline or shadow, and only a few words.
Are these fonts free for monetized YouTube videos?
Yes. Every font on this site is under the SIL Open Font License or the Apache License 2.0. Both allow commercial use, including thumbnails on monetized channels, and allow you to share the font file. Each download includes its license file.
What size should text be on a YouTube thumbnail?
Big enough to read when the thumbnail is small. YouTube shows thumbnails as small as 168 pixels wide in the sidebar, so this tool previews every font at that size and warns you when the text would be smaller than about 14 pixels. In practice that means 2 to 5 words, split over one or two lines.
How do I use the PNG in Canva, PixelLab or CapCut?
Click PNG next to the font you like. The PNG has a transparent background, so you can add it as an image or sticker on top of your thumbnail photo and resize it. It's high resolution, so it stays sharp at 1280 × 720.
How do I install a downloaded font?
Unzip the download. On Windows or Mac, double-click the .ttf file and choose Install. In PixelLab, open Text, then Font, then the import button, and pick the .ttf from your Downloads folder. In Canva, fonts can only be uploaded on a Canva Pro account.
Is anything uploaded when I use the generator?
No. The previews and PNGs are made in your browser. Your text never leaves your device, and there's no sign-up.
